He is the first European to win the Bacardi Cup, one of the oldest and more traditional sailing events, in 2004 and again in 2008. He sailed in 3 Olympic Games, Sydney, Beijing and London in two different classes, the 49er and the Star. Has won 2 diplomas, one in each class and his best ISAF ranking was the 2nd at the 49er and the 4th on the Star. The CEO and Skipper of the best international Portuguese team, a Sailboat of the Class Soto40, the Bigamist. Nowadays Afonso keeps sailing in every kind of boats. For instance keel boats, on the class ORC to J70. On the first one he achieved the title of World Champion in 2022 and in 2021. And on the second he missed the Podium by just one point in the World Championship in this last year. He also coached many different boats, like the 49er, Sniper, keel boats... and has results such as the 3rd place on the World Championship of Snipe in 2022 and the 2nd place on the European Championship of 6M in 2022.
